Turmeric

One of our favourite blends for many reasons, it was actually the first blend we created from our range. Turmeric is fascinating!

This unmistakably bright yellow ingredient dates back nearly 4000 years to the Vedic culture in India (otherwise known as the bronze age), where it was mainly used as a culinary spice, Ayurveda (an alternative and traditional holistic Indian medicine) and held religious significance.

In parts of Asia, turmeric water is applied as a cosmetic to give off a golden glow complexion. Throughout Britain’s vast colonisation attempts, it was no surprise for turmeric to find its way into western culture, becoming extremely popular in the use of authentic curry dishes. Furthermore, the turmeric powder was being touted for more than just a culinary spice, but as a cure for a variety of health problems. The fumes of burning turmeric were used to clear up congestion, while turmeric juices were used to heal wounds and bruises.

Turmeric paste was said to be beneficial for a variety of skin conditions such as smallpox, shingles and rashes. Today, turmeric is one of the most popular ingredients on the planet and turmeric consumption is at an all time high.

Reputed for having an abundance of anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is consumed in many formats such as tea, lattes, juices, shakes, snack bars, pills and many more.

Our Turmeric Blend is designed to awaken your senses, boasting a rich array of nature’s most interesting and flavoursome ingredients with an abundance of health benefits. Turmeric, or known in the botanical world as Curcuma Longa, is native to India. In fact, over 76% of the worlds production comes from India. Our turmeric is grown in northern India where it thrives due to the hot and humid climate. It is the roots and the rhizomes (plant stem) of the Curcuma Longa plant that are consumed, giving turmeric its vibrant bright yellow/orange colour and strong peppery taste. It grows in hilly areas at an altitude of 1500m above sea level.

For optimal turmeric cultivation in India, the ideal temperature ranges between 20 - 30 °C with the rainfall of 1500 - 2250mm per annum. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant.

The carefully considered combination of ingredients were chosen with the idea of the finished beverage providing a variety of warmth & spice. Boasting a rich depth of flavor, our blend is an exciting melting pot of vibrant spices.

This perfectly balanced, harmonised blend is complex, sweet, spicy and bold. Ginger from southern India, provides a delicate spice hit. We wanted the blend to have a consistent kick throughout.

Aromatic black pepper from Sri Lanka increases turmeric absorption by 2000%, it’s dense heat also complimenting the ginger. Also added, a cinnamon from Vietnam. We opted for a sweet, aromatic and fragrant cinnamon to bring balance. A rich, vibrant mahogany, dark brown star anise, also from Vietnam was included. Coconut sugar from Indonesia, rich in flavor with a hint of caramel sweetness and turmeric from northern India, complex, sweet and spicy.

Let’s be honest, drinking turmeric on its own would taste pretty intense even for the most adventurous pallet.

So, at Urban Blends, we have created the perfect blend of delicious natural ingredients to complement its distinct and full-bodied flavour.

Turmeric contains bioactive compounds, the medicinal properties elevating the significance of anti-inflammatory and high anti-oxidant count. Curcumin, the main compound in turmeric can boost brain function and help to lower the risk of heart disease.
